Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakthrough by Ruth Pennebaker

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakthrough
by Ruth Pennebaker

Published: January 2011
Publisher: Berkley Trade
Genre: Chick-lit
Paperback: 320 pages
Rating: 4

Description from the amazon:
Joanie's ex-husband is having a baby with his new girlfriend. Joanie won't be having more babies, since she's decided never to have sex again.

But she still has her teenaged daughter Caroline to care for. And thanks to the recession, her elderly mother Ivy as well. Her daughter can't seem to exist without texting, and her mother brags about "goggling,"-while Joanie, back in the workforce, is still trying to figure out her office computer. And how to fend off the advances of her coworker Bruce.

Joanie, Caroline, and Ivy are stuck under the same roof, and it isn't easy. But sometimes they surprise each other-and themselves. And through their differences they learn that it is possible to undo the mistakes of the past.

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): support
Despite the fun sounding title, this book turned out to be a serious story with three viewpoints from one household.

I liked watching the growth of the individual characters but especially of the characters as a group.

Zombie Survival: The Sword

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Zoe E. Whitten
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

On the seventh floor, it was the sergeant who took another round from the sniper's rifle. He'd just opened the door of a small corner office and as soon as he tried to edge into the room, the sniper fired and put a bullet through his shoulder.

He was still falling back when I rushed through the door. I saw the sniper behind the desk, pulling back the bolt to eject the casing. By the time I crossed the tiny room, he'd chambered a round and was trying to bring the rifle to bear on me.

I slung my sword in a one-armed chop on the sniper's wrist. His dead hand still clutched the rifle forearm as he dropped the gun and fell back to scream.

Walking around the desk, I almost pitied him. He was bright red and blistered, his chapped lips cracked so deeply that he had blood staining his chin. There was a cloudy cataract-coating over his corneas that stained them a sickly grey and washed out the brightness of his ice blue eyes.

No, I really did pity him. But I'd only just begin to empathize with him when he pointed at me and screamed, "Abomination!"

There are some trigger words that it's not a good idea to use around me, and that's right at the top of the list.

The crazy bastard was opening his mouth to scream at me again, and I shoved the point of my sword through his mouth. The dual edges broke out his front teeth and slashed his lips, but I kept shoving until the blade sprang out the back of his neck in a crimson mist cloud.

Zombie Survival: Behind the Door

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Zoe E. Whitten
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

We found the freezers on the second floor, and when we opened the door, we found nothing but flat, dead bodies. No one moved, but then, they would eventually.

Jake started to shut the door, and I stopped him. Handing Kate my torch-arm, I reached over to the thermostat dial beside the door and cranked it up.

Jake's face filled with confusion, and I said, "When they wake up, they'll hurt themselves trying to beat down the door."

Jake's voice was soft and sickened as he moaned, "Oh, fuck, G."

I shook my head, not willing to entertain a debate in our present surroundings. "From now on, We treat the zombies like we would lab animals. We treat them ethically, and we favor clean kills. There will be no torture, and no killing just for the sake of doing it."

"But they'll take over if we don't," Kate said.

"No, they won't. There's other people like Jorge, people who go out every day and wipe out a hundred bodies here and there. But we aren't zombie hunters. We're the scientists, and we're supposed to be looking for a cure. So, right now, we make a vow. We're life makers, not life takers."

Jake and Kate exchanged a worried look before they both nodded their agreement.

I never expected how fast I'd be willing to break my own vow, but it only lasted until we got into the hall, and Blaine turned a fire hose on us.

He hit me with a burst of water from the fire hose first. The stream hit me in the chest. One second, I was standing upright, and the next, I was sliding back through the hallway. With the floor wet, it was like riding a Slip n' Slide chute.

Except Slip n' Slides don't end with a cinderblock wall knocking the sense out of you.

When I recovered, the sound of moaning was too close, and I opened my eyes, screaming at the zombie standing over me. He dropped to his knees, his hands reaching out to grasp my arms.

I sat up fast and slammed my forehead into the zombie's chin. Stunned, he let go of me and stumbled onto his back. Before he could recover, I got to my feet and slung a kick that caught him under his chin. He dropped to the floor, his jaw smashed.

But he wasn't dead, and I had to stomp his head. I almost slipped in his brains when the top of his head exploded under my boot heel.

All of my humane good intentions belonged to my human side, and I'd just turned that part of myself off.

I shouldered aside another man who was reaching for me, and then I grabbed his arm, stepping behind him and pulling his arm around. I bent it up and over his head and yanked down. I didn't need much force to bring him down, and them I stomped his head too.

The next woman was too close to grapple, so when she swung her head in for a bite, I mirrored her, driving my forehead into her nose. She was still reeling back when I grabbed her arm, spun and slammed her into the wall head-first. The top of her head exploded, and she slipped out of my hands, her water-slicked skin impossible to hold.

And so it went; a bloody, ugly fight that I couldn't afford to lose. In between zombies, I glanced around the corridor for signs of Jake or Kate. But I couldn't find them, or Blaine either.

The thought of that nutcase Atheist made my blood boil. He was so wrapped up in his own conspiracy theories that I and my friends were now enemies. The social checkpoints that might have reined in his insanity were gone, and now the only way to deal with him was to kill him.

Or will you die amidst the chaos and violence of a zombie uprising?

Or, worst of all, will you become one of them?

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): no one to blame but yourself
This choose-your-own-adventure tale involves a mid 20's male character who must deal with the zombies in the big apple, NYC.

Some LOL moments as well as strategy to ponder while running (reading) through this adventure. Reading this was like playing a fun board game.

The special treats in this book that make it even more entertaining are the illustrations sprinkled in done by Christopher Mitten. Check out some of the pieces at Christopher's site.

Neatorama Zombie Survival Supplies

Zombie Mints
from the NeatoShop

Neatorama is currently holding a contest (don't know when it ends) with a fun "what if" scenario.

What if you were in the Neatoshop during a zombie outbreak?

--~ Blogosphere Giveaway ~--

Excerpt: from Neatorama
Look through the contents of the NeatoShop and devise materials that you’ll need to survive — improvised weapons, water filters, medical equipment, cook stoves — anything that you’ll need to see through the end of this dark chapter in human history.

Leave the description your improvised survival tool in the comments. The most inventive/funniest/silliest will win your choice of any item under $25 from the NeatoShop, and several runners-up will win a t-shirt of their choice!

Go to the Besieged by Zombies at the NeatoShop for more details and to enter their contest.

DO LET ME KNOW (in comments below), if you enter this contest so that I can go read your list of items.

Here are entries:

vvb:
My top three picks from the NeatoShop would be...

1. Critical Hit: LED Flashing D20 Die - for the moments when in a group setting and volunteers are not forthcoming for chores like carnage cleanup.

2. Credit card survival tool - because all-in-one tools always come in handy

3. Zombie mints - essential when meeting new people, especially if re-populating the world is needed

Totem Salt and Pepper Shaker - oOps, impulse buy
;-D

AimeeKay:
First I'd use boxes of items I'm not gonna use to help barricade the doors.

Then grab some of the Hand Charge Pig Flashlights. So when the power goes I've got something to help me see.

I'm good on food since I have Raman, like the Din Din Fuk Chow and Hello Lazy. (Don't have to cook it to eat it) and I've got plenty of energy drinks and Tru Blood Beverages to wash it down with. I also have some Stay Puff Caffeinated Marshmallows to help keep me going, so I can ration out the other energy drinks.

I can use the hand sanitizers, like the germaphobe one, to help since running water might become an issue, and I don't want to get all germy.

After changing into some new Instant Underpants, cause come on it's the zombie holocaust, I think I'm gonna need a new pair at that point, I'm gonna climb up on the roof with my Slingshot Pens and Using the lightening letter openers from the Butt Lightning as ammo Im gonna start taking them out one at a time.

I'm also gonna take some of the Swear Bear Plushies and throw them off the roof to help distract the zombies from my location.

And I'll be keeping a container of the Resident Evil Outbreak Mints in my back pocket, just in case some other unfortunate humans happen to find their way to my lonely outpost and we need to work on repopulating the earth afterwards.

Night of the Necromancer by Jelanie Sims and Kyle West

Night of the Necromancer:
Can You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse (Volume 1)
by Jelani Sims and Kyle West

Published: 2011
Publisher: CreateSpace
Genre: Zombies
Paperback: 400 pages
Rating: 4

Description from the amazon:
Just hours ago, you were a student trying to survive college. Now, as zombies attempt to knock down your apartment door and eat you alive, you must ask yourself if you will survive the night. And, in order to get through this nightmare, you have to make all the right decisions.

Will you save your overbearing girlfriend, who just broke up with you hours before the zombies arrived? Will you trust the survivors you meet along the way? Will you retreat to the forest in an attempt to escape the undead hordes, or will you face your fear head- on and fight your way through the city?

If you are quick on your feet, you just might see another day. One wrong decision, and you’ll end up as a zombie food, or worse, a member of the undead.

fyi: kindle edition currently available for $3.99

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): choose wisely
This was an action packed choose-you-own-adventure kinda story from the perspective a young male.

I haven't really read much of these type of books and found it entertaining.

I flipped here, there and back again (in some cases) to see my fate in the midst of a zombie outbreak.

Sadly, I found that I would not fare so well in a zombie world. If zombies are not the cause of death then human stupidity can be a factor.

Note to self: don't even think of going for that ice pick!
