Cinderella is standing in the kitchen of the castle, a place she is not supposed to go since she's a princess and higher things are expected of her. The queen doesn't like to see Cinderella mingling with the servants as she does. She'd rather have Cinderella in her proper station, thank you very much.

Cinderella's good friend, Fortune the head cook, is kneading bread at a long wooden table, and little flecks of dough are stuck to her apron. She's a large woman. Cinderella likes talking to her because everything about the kitchen reminds her of her mother and the life she has left to come live in the comfort of royalty.

Only, it's not all she thought it would be.

Fairy tales are supposed to end in happily-ever-after, right?

Cinderella watches Fortune's expert hands push the dough down, pull it up, push it down, and Cinderella misses the feeling of the elastic dough on her fingers. Her own hands always smell clean and flowery now. Her prince likes her clean. He wouldn't want to see her kneading dough in a kitchen that smells of meat and spices.

Cinderella knows her situation is unique.

Cinderella can't forget about kitchens and food and mending dresses.

Cinderella is still in love with someone from her past, and she wishes she could tell Fortune all about it, but before she can open her mouth, a servant rushes into the room to tell Cinderella that the queen wishes to see her.

Where is Cinderella's lover now? The one who showed her what real love is.

"A wonderful ride through a dark suspenseful world, which features a cunning, secretive Cinderella. Luscious prose, and seat of your pants page turning suspense will have you gulping down this gem in one sitting."
